OVERVIEW Stella Grace Rogers, daughter of Irish immigrants Joseph and Sarah. Born three months premature on July 4th, 1918. Weighing only twenty-six ounces, with a slew of heart and lung issues, she wasn't expected to make it through the night.  Spent her first few months as a sideshow attraction in an incubator at Coney Island. Wasn't expected to make it out. August 1918, Joseph Rogers died of mustard gas exposure serving in WWI. Defying the odds, Stella grew into a tiny, surly hothead of a girl. She lived vicariously through books because of her physical limitations and started to draw to pass the time when bedbound. Wasn't expected to make it to puberty. Bucky Barnes punched a boy who made her cry, once. She got so mad at Barnes showing off and playing hero (when she could obviously take care of herself ) that she had an asthma attack telling him off, and afterwards she despised him to the very pit of her angry Irish soul. His smart mouth and devil-may-care attitude won her over -- begrudgingly. (But fully.)  Her mom, a nurse, died in '36 after a long, ugly battle with tuberculosis acquired on the job. Barnes offered to let Stella stay with him and his folks. She refused. Started training to be a nurse shortly thereafter. She did it to honor her mom's memory, and because she wanted to be self-sufficient. Also, news of the war in Europe had started trickling in. Scored a WPA contract painting a mural in a subway at 22, but soon found that nobody else was hiring lady illustrators. After Barnes deployed, Rogers falsified a ton of enlistment forms trying to gain admittance to the Army Nurse Corps, but was repeatedly denied on the basis of her poor health. This didn't stop her trying. Since she didn't expect to make it to 30, anyway, she figured why not go out doing something good with her life, ...and  something useful, for once? Dr. Abraham Erskine caught her red handed, and charmed by her tenacity and desire to help, he made her his assistant.  Peggy Carter smiling with those blood-red lips and then punching a cadet who made a lewd comment was the most beautiful, surreal thing Stella had ever seen in her life -- and was an instant bisexual awakening. The two became inappropriately good friends. Rogers was hit by a stray bullet when Dr. Erskine and his first test subject were gunned down. In the chaos, Carter took decisive action and injected her with Erskine's serum in an attempt to save her life. It worked. Stella was a knowledgable medic who could now run a two minute mile and bench half a platoon of special operators, so, naturally, ... command stuck her in a sequined skirt and a pair of heels and put her on tour dancing the cha cha with the USO. It was better for publicity at home than for morale on the front to see a show implying Hitler was so pathetic even a dame could deck him. Devastated to hear that Barnes' unit was captured and unwilling to give up on him, Stella colluded with Peggy to go AWOL and save the 107th. With Carter's, Stark's, and Barnes' support, Rogers was able to leverage the intel she'd gained on that rescue mission to strong-arm command into establishing the Howling Commandos and allowing her to lead a mission -- thus becoming the first woman to officially lead US troops in combat. She wouldn't budge on her requirement the unit be fully integrated, either: Jones and Morita were the best men for the job. Took a while to earn everybody's respect. Barnes' and Carter's good favor helped things along. The "Captain America" moniker came along later, because none of the Commandos ever let her live it down that she showed up to bust them out of jail in a makeshift red, white, and blue getup, complete with sequined shield. A joke, at first ... it just kinda stuck.  Other stuff and things happened, but after the defeat of Thanos, Stella did not abandon her team to play housewives with Pegs. It felt like an impossible dream (and a lie), and she didn't want an unconventional romance to screw with Peggy's hard-won legacy or with the beautiful family Peg could make for herself. Most importantly, though, there were people in her timeline who still needed her.
